Haematology

Blood investigations are requested for many reasons, from routine check-ups to evaluation of persistent symptoms. The laboratory examines cell counts and appearance, and additional markers when clinically indicated. When abnormal populations are suspected, flow cytometry may be performed for further characterisation. CD3/CD4 measurements are used in selected cases where immune function needs monitoring. Blood grouping and cross-matching are carried out before transfusion requirements.

These measurements are usually needed in urgent settings. They indicate whether breathing, circulation, and metabolic balance are maintained. Clinical Biochemistry & Immunoassay

Many common conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, liver disease, cardiac problems, are followed through biochemical markers. These tests are therefore repeated over time rather than done once. Hormone levels, cardiac markers, tumour markers, and selected infection markers are measured using automated immunoassay methods designed for stable readings across runs.

Histopathology

In clinical practice, histopathology refers to the examination of tissues obtained by biopsy or the surgical removal of an organ. It is a form of anatomical pathology that looks specifically at tissues and organs as opposed to clinical pathology which looks at bodily fluids. Histopathology is performed by a lab-based pathologist who, with the assistance of a medical technologist, prepares the tissues by sectioning them and placing them on a glass slide. The sample can then be exposed to dyes and other techniques to highlight, segregate, or remove cells so they are better viewed under the microscope.

Molecular Biology
